i remember that happening a few times.
one sunday morning my son went up to a young elder and said "hey, i thought you were giving the talk today in xxx xxxxx.
the look of horror on the elder's face!
Once when I was "Joe" elder the speaker didn't show. I grabbed an outline that I hadn't done before and took a few minutes during the WT study to work up a few ideas. I gave the talk after the study and it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable talks I had in my group of talk outlines. Spoke from the heart on that occasion.
I think the congregation enjoyed watching me sweat.

Considering how easy it would be to locate the culprit who might have altered the photo, its doubtful that it was intentional. This is an example where a good editor would have earned his money.

i know of very few that would "dare" tell off a co but elders were different.
having been an elder for many years, it was very easy to go back and forth with a fellow elder and basically tell him he was dumb.
When I was in my teens, my sister's husband took a belt to her and beat her. I went to an elder who I knew that lived nearby. He said, "What can I do? Its a private matter." I said, "the reason you don't do anything is because you're chicken shit!".
My sister divorced the pig when she found out that her elder husband, who was an international pilot, was screwing women all over the globe in addition to molesting her daughter, his step daughter.
Didn't feel bad calling the elder on the carpet on that one.

my mother said that the society sent a letter out to all congregations recently saying that they should keep a few days of food and supplies stored up in the case of a disaster.

apparently it has stirred a lot of discussion about the fast approaching end of the system.
They bitched about the Mormons doing this as I recall. Around here they would ask the Mormons if they had any faith in God's ability to provide for them, if not, then why stockpile goods for the end of the world?
I'm sure this has to do with natural disasters. It's only practical to make sure you have some sort of water and batteries around in case of disasters.

the abuser was my father, we were all (7 children) abused severely (including our mother) as a child i did not understand what exactly was going on but after many years of councelling and so-forth (my counceller tells me, my case is the most severe she has had in her 12 years as a counceller) i discovered that my father was (is) a sado-masichist.
he got sexual enjoyment from beating us all.
i already knew this to an extent i just never realised there was actually a name for what he got out of it.. after 20 odd years of this abuse, my mother had tried to go through the right channels (the elders, in several congregations we moved to etc) in order to get permission to take her children and live separate to her husband who was a constant threat to our very lives (he was a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic & incrediably unpredictable) she was however told time and again that if she left her husband she and her unbaptised children (under 18) would most certainly lose out on everlasting life.
Do you have any photos of you with bruises that this bastard gave you? If so, make up a nice flyer of the photo with a few words on it. I'd distribute it to his neighbors in a clandestine campaign. Perhaps: "Jehovah's Witness child abuser lives on your street. (give address). The state lets him have foster children. How long before he destroys another child's innocence? DO YOU CARE?"
That should ruin his eldership. Send one to the body of elders also. Remember, he has to be a man who has a good standing with people on the outside!

Drugs? Could be. The young brother of a friend of mine was 19 when he dropped dead in the produce dept. of the store he worked in. He had that problem with the heartbeat that causes hearts to stop and no one knew it, not even him. He was a star athelete in high school on the track team. Totally unexpected. Perhaps it was something wierd for her son too? So hard to absorb news like this, too damned much of it happens.
